ISRD is working towards empowerment for better livelihoods, including skill development and vocational education and training, for marginalized and vulnerable persons and people dependent on the informal economy.

Through this project, ISRD aims to transform the lives of Marginalized people living in the urban slums of Bhopal and Jabalpur by creating awareness and better access to their socio-economic rights and entitlements relating to decent work. To enhance the skills of People dependent on informal economy, particularly women and youth and build their capacity to access a wider range of livelihoods through skill building and vocational training. For creating knowledge base and information sharing platform to train civil society actors working with PIEs and government officials for two-way linkage between grassroots work and policy level knowledge.

We are targeting around 3600 unorganized labour belongs from domestic workers, construction workers and street vendors to linkage directly with different workers welfare board/department in Bhopal and Jabalpur respectively. This programe is supported by ActionAid Associate and European Commission (EC).

ISRD is associated with mMitra which is a free mobile voice call service that provides culturally appropriate comprehensive information on preventive care and simple interventions to reduce maternal and infant mortality and morbidity in urban India. The voice calls are in the local dialect, specific to the women's gestational age or the age of the infant and are sent weekly/twice a week free of cost directly to pregnant women and mothers with infants.

Women in the community are enrolled by the sakhis. The women who come for their antenatal check up to the municipal or government hospitals are enrolled by the health supervisors. The women are enrolled for the service through partnership with NGOs, Govt Hosp, Maternity homes and ICDS workers. Clinically tested, individualized voice calls of 90-120 seconds (145 voice calls in all) in Hindi are sent directly to the mobile phones of each enrolled woman.

ISRD started working along with mMitra from April 2016. Since then over 5230 registrations of pregnant women or women with a child below age 1 year are made under this project. ISRD is working with 164 urban slums in Bhopal for mMitra Project.

Features:

  • The voice calls are in the local dialect, specific to the womens' gestational age or the age of the infant.

  • The voice calls will be sent weekly/twice a week free of cost directly to pregnant women and mothers with infants.

  • These voice calls will be delivered to the mother from the second month of pregnancy till the 1st year of her child's life.

  • India ranks first among the countries that account for 2/3rd of the maternal and under-5 mortality in the world. Lack of access to preventive care information is a major cause. The rhetoric of urban bias in development and better conditions in urban vis-à-vis rural has masked the real picture of urban poor.

  • Urban slums populations rank among the poorest and most under-served groups in terms of health.

  • The infant mortality rate for urban infants with low standard of living index is 76.1 and the neonatal mortality rate is 48.8 per thousand, which is higher than the national average. All indicators of delivery and postnatal care were consistently poorer in slum areas when compared to non-slum areas in most Indian cities in NFHS

ISRD is working for the betterment of school dropout children, youth and women in the urban slums of Bhopal through Skill Development Programs. To achieve this aim, ISRD did a baseline survey of various slums identifying the current situation of the school dropouts and women of age group 18-35. It was observed that most of these identities were unskilled, desiring to transform their current situation, however, helpless due to various conditions like financial constrains, family problems or no skill development centre in their vicinity.

In order to transform their vulnerable condition, Skill development programs such as Garment making, Domestic Workers Training (Institutional), Electrician, Beauty Parlor, Driving, Basic computer, Tally, DTP Operator and Retail are introduced to them. Prior to the training career counseling is given to the beneficiaries helping them to understand each of the training courses and chose the best as per their abilities.

Great transformation is taking place in the lives of needy women and youths through our efforts. Over 2500 boys and girls received training through our Skill development programs and are now making a living, leading towards a dignified life. Our main focus is women empowerment hence more women become a part of our training programs. Skill Development Training Programs are done in partnership with FVTRS, WorldVision, MPCVET and Actionaid.
